Navajo Nation Justice Centers

Locations: Crownpoint, New Mexico and Chinle, Arizona

As a subconsultant to the project architect, BHI provided site grading and onsite private storm drainage system design, designed the site water and sanitary sewer system along with fire protection facilities and provided construction administration for three Justice Centers for the Navajo Nation. Facility improvements for the Navajo Nation Justice Center in Chinle, AZ, included a 110,000 square foot, three-building complex with space for courts and related facilities, law enforcement, and corrections, and a 180,000 gallon fire storage tank for the facility. For the Navajo Justice Center in Tuba City, NM, BHI provided onsite design civil engineering and surveying services. The Justice Center comprises approximately 129,000 square feet of buildings including law enforcement, correctional and courts facilities, and a peacemaking Hogan. The four buildings were united in a distinctive campus/site design, incorporating cultural sensitivity, open design and easy accessibility while accommodating appropriate user group separation.

Showing innovativeness through the value engineering process, a large majority of the storm drainage was removed and the site was designed to handle roof drainage via surface flow. The sanitary sewer lagoon was designed such that it would fit within the existing right-of-way currently owned by NTUA.
