NM 502 Emergency Repairs at Jaconita and Jacona Arroyos
Location: NM 502 & US 84, New Mexico
Emergency repairs on the downstream side of the existing multi-barrel concrete box culverts (CBCs) or corrugated metal pipes (CMP) under NM 502 were required due to extreme scour conditions. BHI worked under a fast-track basis for both of these projects in the same vicinity to analyze the hydraulics of various alternatives and complete the design of a concrete apron, gabion drop structures, and retaining walls to increase channel stability. A stilling basin was included for both locations to dissipate runoff energy and prevent further erosion. Each project required site visits, review of available data, survey, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, and the preparation of preliminary and final construction plans. Design for both projects was completed on an accelerated schedule using a phased design approach to address right-of-way constraints and limitations on construction methods and materials.
