City of Hobbs Launches Public Release of Web-Enabled City-Wide Mobile LiDAR Scanning Data
City of Hobbs Partners with Bohannan Huston, Hobu, Inc., and Transcend Spatial Solutions for City-Wide Mobile LiDAR Scanning Project
The City of Hobbs is pleased to announce the public release of its Mobile LiDAR Scanning (MLS) data collection. In a partnership, Hobu, Inc. and Bohannan Huston, Inc. published high-resolution 3D data of the City of Hobbs to the web to demonstrate proof-of-concept data processing and access capabilities of the open source Entwine Point Tile (EPT) data format in the Mobile LiDAR domain.
EPT enables data distribution and processing of the City’s 24 billion point LiDAR capture while providing convenient visualization access in a web browser. This data is available online using a WebGL-capable Firefox or Chrome internet browser and by visiting https://hobbslidar.com. Utilizing a LiDAR sensor making measurements while using laser beams that are returning accurate point distance measurements, Transced Spatial Solutions collected data from a ground-based Mobile Mapping System driven along roadways throughout the City of Hobbs. A key advantage of the EPT data management approach is convenient visualization, management, and exploitation of the entire dataset. Since the scale of these data are captured at street level, the technology enables end users to navigate and interact with the dataset in full detail offered by the rich color-encoded 3D data while maintaining direct access to the overall city-wide context at any time. These LiDAR points create an image through which a user is able to measure distance, height, range, as well as define color. This data is capable in assisting the City of Hobbs and other road safety workers on countless construction projections and engineering and planning projects.
The City of Hobbs Mobile LiDAR scanning project captured approximately 300 linear miles of roadway data. Led by Bohannan Huston, Inc. and acquired by Transcend Spatial Solutions, the project MLS data was commissioned to provide a high accuracy baseline dataset for development of mapping products initially in support of floodplain management, capital improvement projects, and other municipal applications.
