Albuquerque Bicycle and Trail Crossings Guide

Owner: City of Albuquerque

Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico

This document provides guidance for selecting bicycle and pedestrian crossing locations and appropriate treatments. It includes pedestrian and bicycle safety countermeasure fact sheets that evaluate benefits, limitations, design considerations, complementary treatments, and appropriate locations for application, as well as crash modification factors and best practices research for each. The BHI team developed several easy-to-use tools that can be applied city-wide to ensure consistent and adequate crossing infrastructure. The site selection tool prioritizes locations based on local policies, while the crossing treatment selection tool is based on technical feasibility and roadway context factors. Recommendations are based on FHWA best practices and a comprehensive review of peer agency practices. The guide adapts national guidance to an Albuquerque context by encouraging road diets, median refuge islands, and traffic calming as an alternative to signalized crossing treatments where appropriate.
